It's a reality!
This is my first blog post for Hampton Hollow Farm! Since Erin and I met, we've been talking about bringing back the old Marshall family farm, and it's so exciting to see it turn in to reality. For those of you that don't know I worked at Fist Fulla Fives as an account manager for almost ten years. I enjoyed working there. My co-workers were friends, and it was a flexible, laid back environment, for the most part. I travelled and met many people, who I will have life-long friendships with. However ten years is a long time, and I was ready for a change. When our son Mason came along, I couldn't travel as much, and wanted to spend more time with him. My friend had told me about the Self Employment program through the NS government, that provides entrepreneurial support and financial assistance while starting your own business. A program to help us write our daunting business plan!? Workshops to help us run a business? It sounded like exactly what I was looking for. After writing a concept proposal for our farm in December, I was accepted into the program and started my workshops at CEED in February. I am now more than halfway through the program and our farm is open! While Erin is still working in the GIS field, he is working harder than ever on the farm. I swear, he can do the work of ten men. Mason is now a very active year and a half, and thank goodness we have family as neighbors to help us on the farm, as well as babysit, so we can get work done!
So far, this has been a positive learning experience, and we have met great people. Everyday can be different, from attending a market, to planting crops to delivering our fresh veggies to a restaurant. This was a big change for our little family, but we have no regrets, and while some days it can be scary opening your own business, we are really happy working on our farm in Hampton. Follow our blog, we have big dreams for our little farm on the bay.
